Effective Ways to Get Rid of Calluses
Calluses; singlehandedly able to force you to trade in your stunning pair of heels for a pair of sensibly-closed flats, or make you flinch every time you rub your hands together. Calluses and blisters are naturally unavoidable if your line of work revolves around strenuous, manual labor. It is also entirely plausible that a cramped schedule may make it impossible for you to sit down at the end of the day and spread some much-needed moisturizer over your hands and feet.
So you may require an effective strategy to rid yourself of those troublesome calluses. Lotions – as heavily enriched and promising as they may seem – appear powerless in the face of tough, blistering patches. It is important to note, however, that skin tissue generally becomes thinner as we age, resulting in calluses developing far more quickly as they would on the skin of a younger individual. Such calluses appear on the heels, and beneath the toes on both feet. Hands may also display calluses, provided the area of the skin has been subjected to constant friction.

- Soak your callused feet and hands in boiling or warm water. This process should soften the skin, and remove any slighter calluses and blisters with a handful of uses. Do not soak your hands and feet for more than 10 minutes at a time – remember to soften your skin, not burn off layers of skin tissue!
- A tried and tested approach towards effectively removing calluses involves adding Epsom salts to the water in which you intend to soak your hands and feet. Around 3 to 4 teaspoons of Epsom salt should do the trick. Allow your skin to soften and soak, and then target the problem areas with a pumice stone or foot file to scrub at your hands at feet.
- Effectively ridding yourself of calluses may require you to run to the grocery store and pick up a packet of baking soda. Fill a basin with warm or boiling water, and add 3 tablespoons while your hands and feet soak. Allow your callused hands and feet to stay in this mixture for up to 30 minutes before targeting the calluses with a pumice stone or foot file. Remember – spread sessions over several weeks so as to not cause severe damage to your skin. If your skin starts bleeding or smarting during scrubbing, stop immediately.
- Apple cider vinegar may also prove an effective tactic to remove calluses. Using no more than 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, soak either a pliable sponge or small cotton ball. Secure this soaked material to a callus overnight, and scrub away the dry skin thoroughly with a pumice stone the very next morning.
- Similarly, combine 3 tablespoons of lemon juice with up to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil. Add enough baking soda to this mixture to turn the combination into a paste. Apply this paste to the affected areas for half an hour before washing and scrubbing clean. The acidic nature of the lemon juice peels away dry skin, while the coconut oil and baking soda act as natural emollients and exfoliants respectively!
Following these procedures and remedies over the course of several, patient weeks can prove to effectively get rid of calluses on both your hands and feet. Always remember to pat your skin dry after each soaking session, and moisturize as regularly and frequently as possible!
