JBL Charge 3 vs JBL Charge 2 plug: In Depth

Now that I’ve talked about the basic features and differences between the JBL Charge 3 and the Charge 2 speakers, We’ll discuss each sound system with more detail to give you the information you need to make an educated purchase.

JBL Charge 3 Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

The JBL Charge 3 claims to offer a way to take your music on the go without sacrificing sound quality. Does it accomplish its goal? Let’s take a look at the features and drawbacks of this system and try to get a sense of the type of consumer who would enjoy this product.

JBL Charge 3 JBLCHARGE3BLKAM Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker (Black)

JBL Charge 3 JBLCHARGE3BLKAM Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker (Black)

Pros:

  • One of the main draws of a lot of these JBL brand speakers is the support for up to three connected devices at a time. This allows multiple people to control the music which is a pretty unique feature.
  • They claim that the battery offers 20 hours of playtime on a single charge, which would allow for a solid day playing music from your speakers. Whether that’s actually true will be discussed in the cons below.
  • Certified IPX7 waterproofing means that if your speaker takes an unfortunate spill, you won’t be out your investment.
  • Being able to take calls from your bluetooth speaker is a nice perk, but we’re not 100% sure how much use that feature will get in actual practice.

Cons:

  • Whether or not this speaker will actually last through 20 hours of continuous play is up for debate. Most portable speakers come with a disclaimer that actual playtime may vary from claims, and it’s very likely that blasting music a a high volume continuously will drain the battery a decent amount faster than claimed.
  • Not the best looking speaker, but that’s all personal preference.

Is the JBL Charge 3 Right for You?

The JBL Charge 3 is a good buy if you enjoy being able to play music from multiple devices, value lightweight speakers with a high battery life, and enjoy great bass from your audio systems.

How can the JBL Charge 3 Apply to Your Lifestyle?

As mentioned above in the analysis, one of the main draws of the JBL Charge 3 is the ability to play music from more than one computer or phone. If you play music with a lot of people who have varying tastes, allowing others control of the speaker without requiring a new bluetooth sync is a nifty feature.

Being able to connect to multiple speakers also makes it a solid option for those who require a bigger, more extensive sound system.

Bottom Line

There’s really not a lot that’s wrong with this speaker, especially when compared to the earlier model. It offers improvements in pretty much every area of the specifications, and is available for the same MSRP.

JBL Charge 2+ Splashproof Bluetooth Speaker Review

The JBL Charge 2+ was a great speaker at the time of its release in 2015, but does it stand the test of time when compared to the newest model? Below I’ve listed the pros and cons of this model so you can decide if this is a good choice for your bluetooth speaker purchase.

JBL Charge 2+ Splashproof Bluetooth Speaker Grey

JBL Charge 2+ Splashproof Bluetooth Speaker Grey

Pros:

  • Like the more recent model, the JBL Charge 2+ includes the ability to play audio from multiple devices at the same time.
  • The audio quality is roughly the same as the newer model.
  • Being able to take calls is a good feature, but as we mentioned in the section above. There are limited opportunities to take advantage of the option.
  • In my opinion, it’s the better model of the two aesthetically.

Cons:

  • It has a lower battery life at only 12 hours.
  • It’s splashproof rather than waterproof, meaning it will be ruined if you drop it into water.
  • It’s slightly heavier than the newer model.
  • Overall, it offers basically no improvements when compared to the JBL Charge 3

Is the JBL Charge 2+ Right for You?

Like I discussed above, the only reason to buy this speaker is if you like how it looks and that means a lot more to you than better features and quality.

How can the JBL Charge 2 Apply to Your Lifestyle.

Like the JBL Charge 3, it’s great for allowing multiple people to play music. Other than that it doesn’t really have much going for it.

Bottom Line

To put it bluntly, avoid this speaker and buy the JBL Charge 3. The only reason to purchase this model is if you like the look better, and even if that’s the reason you’re losing a lot of improvements in the trade-off.
