Neato Botvac vs Roomba: The Reviews

The iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot Review

The iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot provides an autonomous cleaning solution in the form of a little disc shaped robot. Is its extensive praise warranted? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the Roomba 780 in my Roomba comparison and review.

iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot

iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot

  • A full suite of sensors means that it will be easy for your Roomba to navigate your floors. Additionally, iRobot includes Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacons that give you more control over where your Roomba ventures.
  • Cliff Detecting Technology ensures that your Roomba won’t take a spill down the stairs, allowing it to be used on the upper levels of your home.
  • Ability to detect different floor types, allowing for cleaning from carpet to hardwood or tile with no interruption.
  • 3-stage cleaning technology for deep cleansing of your floors.
  • Long Battery Life
  • HEPA filter

  • The Roomba 780 is large and heavy. This won’t normally be a problem, but when it comes time to clean it, it’s a little bit of a hassle.
  • Relatively small bin capacity when compared to the Neato Botvac.
  • A well-known brand name leads to inflated prices, making the Roomba significantly more expensive than its competitors.

Is the Roomba right for you?

The Roomba’s main selling point is the 3-stage cleaning that really does a strong job of deep cleaning your floors. If your floors accumulate dust and dirt quickly, the Roomba may be a good fit.

How can the Roomba’s features apply to your lifestyle?

  • The Lighthouse Beacon technology will let you block the Roomba from certain rooms, making it perfect for areas where you don’t want intrusion. Adjust the beacons on the fly when you don’t want to be disturbed.
  • The deep cleaning technology means that you’ll get the most out of each session. A powerful HEPA filter helps trap dust and debris and reduces allergens.
  • A long battery life allows the Roomba to cover a large floor plan before needing to recharge, which allows for reliable coverage of even big homes.

Bottom Line

This Roomba model, while not without its flaws, is a solid and reliable option for regular vacuuming. Pick this up if you have a little extra cash to spend and a deep clean is your top priority.

The Neato Botvac D80 Robot Vacuum for Pets and Allergies Review

The Neato Botvac D80 Robot Vacuum for Pets and Allergies is a viable alternative to the more popular iRobot Roomba line. Below I’ve listed some of the pros and cons of the Neato Botvac as well as some thoughts on who would get the most benefit out of this alternative option.

Neato Botvac D80 Robot Vacuum for Pets and Allergies

Neato Botvac D80 Robot Vacuum for Pets and Allergies

  • Intelligent mapping scans the entire room and plans the most efficient path to clean the entirety of the floor.
  • A unique D-shape design makes it a little easier for the Neato Botvac to fit into small spaces and tight corners when compared to the Roomba 780.
  • A large dust bin means you’ll be able to go long periods of time without emptying it
  • Auto-charge and resume allows the vacuum to pick up right where it left off, even if it runs low on battery during a scheduled cleaning.
  • Lightweight with reasonable dimensions makes transport and maintenance pretty easy.

  • Although the Neato Botvac advertises itself as a “Vacuum for Pets and Allergies”, its filter is labeled as a “Professional filter” rather than the certified “HEPA” Filter which actually means something. The Roomba might actually do a better job at trapping allergens.
  • No infrared remote means that when it’s time to program or control your Botvac, you’re going to have to get down on the floor and adjust it manually right on the vacuum itself.

Is the Neato Botvac right for you?

If you want a “set it and forget it” approach when it comes to your robotic vacuum and don’t mind the tradeoff of a slightly less powerful machine, go with the Neato Botvac.

How can the Neato Botvac’s features apply to your lifestyle?

  • If cleaning your vacuum is a chore you hate, the Neato Botvac will require a lot less of it do to the larger bin size.
  • The unique D-shape makes it optimal for environments with a lot of tight corners, spaces, and obstacles.
  • The automatic recharge and resume features means that the Neato Botvac can tackle a huge space, even if it runs out of charge in the middle of a session.

Bottom Line

The Neato Botvac is a great option for those who prefer more of a hands off approach to vacuuming when compared to the Roomba

Additional Tips

Each of the two vacuums are relatively easy to use. However, both require that you charge them overnight before the first use. It may be tempting to try out your new robot immediately, but giving it that time to charge is essential before allowing your Roomba or Botvac to explore your home.

Each vacuum is available for purchase in multiple places online, but Amazon often has sales or special deals. Check out the Roomba and the Neato on Amazon!

The Final Verdict: The Winner of the Roomba vs Neato

Each vacuum has its pros and cons, but I think when looking at the Roomba vs Neato, the latter is the clear winner here. While slightly less powerful, it requires much less care and attention which is the main draw of a robot vacuum. Large bin capacity, cutting edge technology, and a convenient shape made for those hard to reach places makes it a better alternative. Roomba remained the vacuum robot king for quite a long time, but in my opinion it’s been dethroned.
